A prominent Niagara Square landmark will be up for grabs at an October 7 auction. The NYS Office of General Services is working with CBRE Buffalo to sell the Walter J. Mahoney State Office Building located at 65 Court Street. The five floor, Green & Wicks designed building opened in 1931 and contains approximately 69,000 sq.ft. of space.
The building will be sold fully vacant and available for ownership and redevelopment by the private sector. The auction will occur at 10 a.m. on October 7 on the first floor of the Mahoney Building. The minimum bid has been set at $750,000.

The lobby and first floor contain unique architectural features, including original ceiling details (molding and stonework), murals and paintings of Western New York and the Buffalo area, and art deco metalwork and light fixtures, all of which are in excellent restored condition. Building entrances are adorned with art-deco bas relief and unique metal entry sculptures, gates, and panels. The first floor is configured with six oversized chambers that have been used as hearing rooms, assembly areas, and a court room. Both the first and second floors contain an annex shown on the north side of the building, adding to their footprint.
Floors 3-5 have been used as general office spaces by the State of New York. Each floor is approximately 11,695 gross square feet and is served by the elevator system in the building. The rectangular configuration of these floors provides for maximum efficiency in space layout and the opportunity for abundant natural light for all areas including the core. Upper level floors are serviced by two opposite floor end stairwells and all elevators.
